Play Therapy

for children and young people aged

3-15 years

Blue Glitter Slime

Non-directive play therapy applies the Axline principles in practice, my role is to:

  • Develop a warm and friendly relationship with the child

  • Accept the child as is

  • Establish a feeling of permission, allowing the child or young person to make choices

  • Recognise the feelings the child expressed

  • Follow the child or young person’s play, rather than direct it

  • Enable the child to be independent in finding resolution to their challenges

  • Not rush the therapy

  • Anchor the play with minimal limitations, within a safe environment

Play therapy sessions typically last 40 minutes, and are arranged for the same time each week. Whilst there can be some interruption to the sessions, it is important that these are minimised to ensure the efficacy of the process.

Confidentiality in the play room is important, without this a child or young person may not fully process their thoughts and feelings. If they choose to share with you what they have done in a session that is acceptable. It is important though that the child or young person is not asked about their session. I also will not tell you what has occurred in a session.

To ensure you are aware of their progress a consultation is offered after 8 sessions. Generally the pathway is:

Initial consultation with parents/carer & the child

8 face to face sessions

Consultation to review progress

Further sessions

End Consultation
